Shopping for your wedding dress should feel exciting, empowering and a genuinely enjoyable experience – whatever body size and shape you’re rocking.  But many of our curvy brides still arrive feeling a bit unsure.  There’s a perception that boutiques won’t have dresses that fit them, that they might be limited in style choice and that trying the gowns on might just feel a bit awkward.  None of that could be further from the truth.

At Lily’s, helping our brides feel confident and celebrated is…. well, it’s everything, regardless of the size on the label.  We’ve worked with brides of all shapes and sizes and the focus is always on fit, personality and creating as relaxed and supportive an experience as we can to make sure you leave having chosen the dress of your dreams.  If you’re starting your search for plus-size wedding dresses, here’s everything we know to help you feel confident from the very beginning.

The boutique matters – choose an inclusive experience

Where you shop makes a huge difference.  Not all bridal boutiques carry a wide range of size and not all teams are equally experiences in fitting curvier brides.  Choosing a boutique that regularly works with plus-size brides helps remove any uncertainty from the off.

At Lily’s, plus-size isn’t a separate category, it’s just part of what we do. So many of our brides are size 16 and above so our team is very used to working with all shapes and sizes of body.  Our years of experience means we’re really good at understanding what kind of fit and support you might need in a dress, knowing exactly which dresses we have that would work for you and create a lovely, relaxed environment for you to try them on and enjoy yourself.

We don’t focus on limitations but the possibilities for you to feel your very best you on your wedding day, in whichever gown you choose.

Let the bride lead

A good appointment will always start with our brides choosing what they’re drawn to.  Your size is the very least interesting thing about you – we want to know the dresses you love that you’ve dreamed of since you were a little girl, your plans for your big day, all the tiny details you’ve woven into your plan.  These are the things that determine your dress choice.

So, we’ll leave you to explore our gowns and pick out those that speak to you whether they’re fitted, floaty, dramatic or super simple.  Once you’ve tried a few options, our stylists can use that as a great starting point to guide you towards shapes, styles and colours that highlight the features you want to show off and encapsulate the theme of your day.  We want your gown to truly empower you which only comes from you leading the way, with a little expert guidance close by.

Our brides are often surprised by what they end up loving. Something they hadn’t considered – perhaps a more structured bodice or defined waist – suddenly feels perfect once they see how it enhances their shape. The key is working together.

Fit over size: why the label doesn’t matter

One of the biggest things to remember when shopping for a plus-size wedding dress is that things vary massively across designers.  Not to mention that bridal sizing is very different from high street sizing so the number is rarely meaningful.

What truly matters is how the dress fits and supports your shape.  At Lily’s, your stylist will focus on silhouette and structure rather than size.  This is especially important for brides with bigger boobs, defined waists or curvier hips, where the right construction can completely transform how a dress sits and feels on the body.

Corset-style bodices, supportive linings and structured fabrics all help create shape and definition.  A well-fitted gown enhances natural proportions, often highlighting a waist that brides didn’t realise was there! The focus is never on the number but on how you feel when you look in the mirror.

The power of the right silhouette

Certain silhouettes tend to work beautifully for curvier figures; a few styles consistently stand out:

A-line dresses are universally flattering. They define the waist while skimming over the hips, creating balance and elegance.

Fit-and-flare or mermaid silhouettes accentuate curves and can look stunning when paired with the right internal support.

Empire waist gowns are so comfortable and still flatter the bust while creating a soft, flowing, feminine shape.

Fabric also plays a big role.  Structures materials like Mikado and satin give support and shape, while lace and chiffon add softness and movement. Combining structure with softer layers often creates the most flattering result.

The right silhouette doesn’t hide your shape, it celebrates it.

Dress for personality, not size

One of the most important parts of plus-size bridal shopping is remembering that you’re not just choosing for your body, you’re choosing for your personality.

The styling process isn’t different for curvy brides. It’s the same conversation about your venue, your style, your tastes and how you want to feel on the day.  A bold, bubbly bride may be drawn to something dramatic or fitted.  A quieter bride might prefer something clean and elegant.  Neither choice is about size, it’s about who you are.

When stylists take time to understand your personality, the result is always more authentic.  Confidence comes from wearing something that feels like you, not just something that fits well.

Confidence comes from support: emotional and physical

For so many of our brides, trying on wedding dresses is the first time being the centre of attention in this way.  It can feel really quite daunting, especially if you’re already nervous about fit or whether you’ll find something you really adore.

Creating a supportive environment makes all the difference.  Gentle encouragement, patience and a relaxed pace helps our brides open up and explore styles they might never have considered before.  Feeling heard and comfortable is so important in growing your confidence.

The support your dress offers is equally important.  Dresses with boning, stretch panels, supportive cups and structured linings help our brides feel secure and comfortable/. When a gown supports you properly, it can feel like a second skin; you stand differently, move differently and feel so much more at ease.

Confidence often comes from that combination of emotional reassurance and thoughtful construction.

What we’re seeing in the boutique

We can talk the talk but when our brides are in the fitting room we know we can walk the walk too.  We love those appointments where a bride falls completely in love with the dress and her body in it.

Our curvier hourglass brides often find that an A-line silhouette highlights their gorgeous waist.  For them, it’s instant comfort and confidence when the dress is on…it’s often hard to get them out of it again at the end of our appointment!

Some brides arrive a bit worried that their options will be limited by their body shape.  After seeing the range of inclusive wedding dresses we have in store and trying styles freely, they realise that’s just not the case. We have plenty of choice for each and every one of our brides.

Our favourite has to be those brides who really feel the magic and end up leaving with something a world away from what they thought they wanted.  We had a shy bride who came in looking at very simple, beautiful but inconspicuous gowns.  Once she relaxed a little, she tried curve-hugging mermaid dress with a structured corset.  The change in confidence was instant, the dress matched her personality perfectly, once she felt comfortable expressing it.
