Choosing your wedding dress is a hugely loaded moment (in the very best way). Chances are you’ve dreamt about, talked about, carried pictures around of and Pinterested your dream dress more times than you can count. And rightly so, it’s a big moment. Full of joy but also emotional and perhaps a bit overwhelming. With endless designer bridal gowns, silhouettes, fabrics and magazines to sift through, it’s easy to fall in love with a dress that looks stunning online but doesn’t feel quite right on YOU. And that’s of course the most important bit.
We’ve helped thousands of brides navigate this exact moment. The perfect dress is about so much more than what’s trending, it’s about bringing together your shape, your personality, your wedding and how you want to feel when you walk down that aisle towards your happy ever after.
If you’re at the start of your dress journey, take our hand, let’s have a look at what’s really important (and what’s not).
Body shape beats fashion trends
Most brides arrive with a camera roll full of inspo which is brilliant – it gives us a real insight into your style. BUT so many of our brides leave with a gown that looks absolutely nothing like that inspo. And that’s because real bodies are just that: real. Not models or mannequins.
Trends that might catch the eye online – oversized bows, thigh high splits, ultra-low backs – but they often don’t translate to real bodies. Getting the fit and feel just right for you is where your big day confidence will come from.
A flattering shape will always outlast a fashion moment. And when you look back at your photos years later, we promise you won’t be thinking about trends, you’ll be remembering how fantastic you felt.
Let brides lead, then guide with expertise
One of the biggest differences at Lily’s Boutique is how appointments begin. The very first thing you’ll do is take your time and choose the dresses that speak to you – those that look most like your inspiration, that have the features and materials you adore, that your bride squad think are most ‘you’.
Letting our brides start this way, gives us so much insight and information into what you love (you might also realise you’re drawn to something you had no idea you loved too). And once we know the starting point, we can guide you to the dresses that match your tastes and your body quickly. Working together like this is the best way to get you to the dress of your dreams…even if it ends up not being the one you actually dreamed about!
You’d be surprised at how often the ‘just give it a try’ dress, becomes The One.
Matching dress shape to body shape
Understanding how different silhouettes interact with your proportions can transform the shopping experience from confusing to empowering
Curvier figures often benefit from an A-line shape, which defines the waist while skimming smoothly over bums, hips and thighs. Lots of women with fuller boobs and hips also have a naturally smaller waist – this silhouette highlights that balance perfectly.
Petite brides frequently find that slimmer shapes – a sheath or softer mermaid skirt – elongate the body and stop the dress overwhelming their frame.
Structured bodices and corsetry can be a bit of a game changer, especially for fuller figures. Materials like Mikado or satin create clean lines, deliver excellent support (right where you need it) and sculpt the waist without stopping you enjoying your wedding breakfast.
Mermaid styles are ideal for curvier figures, hugging the body in all the right places before flaring at the knee. Mermaid dresses are all about drama and elegance in one.
We’re never aiming to disguise your body, rather to showcase it and the bits you love in the most flattering way we can.
Fabric choices: structure, flow and confidence
Fabric affects not only how a dress looks but how it moves, feels and supports your body through the day.
Satin bridal gowns are perfect for structure and a smooth finish. They create a polished silhouette and often give just the right amount of support, making them a popular choice for modern, minimalist brides.
Lace wedding dresses are all about softness and romance. Lace drapes gently and loosely contours the body for an utterly timeless feel.
Mikado fabric has become so popular recently because it’s just so crisp! Similar to taffeta but stronger, it holds its shape beautifully while still hanging elegantly so it’s super flattering for lots of different body types.
Comfort is just as important as appearance (trust us). Brides quickly recognise their dress when they stop thinking about how they look and start imagining their walk down the aisle or their first dance in it.
Personality plays a major role in fit
It’s no shocker that two brides with identical measurements can leave our boutique with completely different gowns – because personality is everything when it comes to a dress being The One.
Some brides gravitate towards drama and statement details, choosing bold silhouettes, striking fabrics or quirky colours. Others are all about soft, romantic designs or clean, understated styles. It’s all about personal tastes.
Our main job is to pay attention to how each and every bride responds emotionally. We can see instantly whether you’ve fallen in love with the dress you’re trying, whether you need something more dramatic or something a little more pared back. That initial reaction is unmistakable and gives us the biggest indicator on where to take things next. The goal isn’t to transform you into someone else, it’s to find a dress that makes you feel like the most confident version of who you really are.
Considering the venue and practicalities
Your venue, season and travel plans can influence your choice more than you might expect, especially if you’re going for a destination wedding.
Lots of our brides initially go for practical, lightweight dresses that will be easy to transport. But once they start trying dresses on, the emotional connection often outweighs logistics. It’s not unusual for someone planning an overseas ceremony to fall in love with a full A-line gown with a dramatic skirt rather than the simple, beach ready dress they had in mind.
Luckily, this isn’t our first rodeo. Practical issues can always be managed and we can help you figure out how to transport your gown to wherever in the world it needs to be. Getting the right dress is the most important thing and if it makes you feel incredible, a little extra planning is no big deal.
Real-life moments that say it all
For us, there’s no better feeling than helping our beautiful brides find their dream dresses and we’re pretty good at it even if we do say so!
The abroad bride
One bride focused entirely on practicality. She was planning a wedding abroad and wanted something light, simple and easy to fit in a suitcase. Then she tried on a full, A-line gown with a sweeping skirt – the kind of dress she hadn’t even considered before that moment. The change was instant. She lit up, stood taller and couldn’t imagine getting married in anything else. We knew we had to find a way to get that gown into the case!
The confident curvy bride
Another bride with a fuller figure was absolutely convinced that structured corsetry wouldn’t suit her. She gravitated toward softer, less fitted styles at first. After a little encouragement, she tried on a more structured gown and her reaction said it all. Her waist was gorgeously defined, her posture changed and she just couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. The support and shape made her look fantastic and feel incredible.
The bubbly, try-everything bride
Some of our brides just want to experience it all! One of these brides happily stepped into everything from sleek sheaths to dramatic ballgowns, laughing and chatting the whole time. As her appointment went on, certain dresses made her stop, go quiet and really look at herself. Those little emotional shifts show us which styles are the ones to try more of. In the end, this bride chose a gown that surprised even her because it felt unquestioningly ‘her’.
