We might be a bit biased but we all know it’s true: finding your wedding dress is one of the most exciting bits of wedding planning. Once you start your search, you’ll find out pretty quickly that there’s a bit more to it than simply falling in love with something on Pinterest or Instagram and job done.

You'll have a whole list of questions and things to think about: your budget, your venue, your timeline, what styles actually suit you in person versus on a screen. And one of the first big decisions you'll need to make is whether to go for a ready-to-wear (off-the-rack) gown that you can take home the same day, or a made-to-order dress that's uniquely yours.

First things first – what’s the difference?

A ready-to-wear or off-the-rack gown is exactly as it sounds – a finished gown that’s already here in the boutique, ready to try on and take home with you on the spot.  A made-to-order dress is produced after you place your order. You choose your style, pay for it and then it’s made and delivered, normally within a few months.  Both can look absolutely stunning and neither is inherently better.  It really just comes down to your timeline, your budget and what’s most important to you.

You can take it home today

This is the big one.  If your wedding is coming up soon or you’ve simply spotted the one and you want it off the rail and safely in your wardrobe, ready-to-wear is your answer!   There’s no production wait, no delivery window to plan around and no nervously tracking a shipment with three weeks to go till the big day.  You find it, you love it, it’s yours. 

At Lily’s, every gown in our ready-to-wear range is brand new and available to take home the same day.

It’s seriously kind on the budget

All of our ready-to-wear bridal gowns are priced at £499 or less and many are significantly reduced from their original RRP, which means you could pick up your dream gown for a fraction of the cost.  If you’re keeping a close eye on your wedding budget (and honestly, who isn’t?), it can make a real difference.

And when you pay in full, you’ll get a £25 voucher towards any alterations needed.  Which brings us neatly on to…

What you see is really what you get

One of the loveliest things about buying off-the-rack is that you’re trying on the exact dress you’ll be wearing on your wedding day. There are no surprises on delivery, no wondering if the fabric will look different in person, no slight panic when the box arrives.  You’ve worn it, you’ve twirled in it, you know you love it.  That confidence and certainty is worth a lot.

Alterations can start straight away

Because the dress is already with you, our in-house seamstress can get started on any alterations immediately.  No waiting for a delivery to land before you can even think about fittings.  The whole process moves faster and you’ll have more time to get the fit absolutely perfect before your big day.

One big thing ticked off the list

Wedding planning is a lot.  Sorting your dress early – and immediately, no less – is a satisfying feeling and often when it all starts coming together for our brides.  Getting the dress ticked off the list frees up headspace, takes away a major source of potential stress and means you can focus on everything else you need to get done.

So much choice

When you go made-to-order, you’re not limited to what’s currently in stock.  There are more styles to explore, a broader range of sizes available and in some cases, you can alter the fabrics or make design tweaks that make a dress truly yours.  Our bridal collection includes gorgeous dresses available from size 8 to 30 to try in-store.  If you have a very specific vision in mind, made-to-order opens up more possibilities.

It’s made specifically for you

Who doesn’t want a dress that’s been made fresh, just for them? Made-to-order gowns feel more personal and the process of choosing every little detail – knowing it hasn’t been tried on by anyone else – makes the whole experience feel a bit more unique.  For some brides, that’s really important.

A timeline for planners

If you're the kind of person who likes everything mapped out in advance, the made-to-order process actually suits that really well. Ordering early, building in production and delivery time and planning your fittings at each stage gives you a clear, structured path to your wedding day. For some brides, that organised runway is like a comfort blanket.

If your wedding is within the next four to five months, ready-to-wear is almost certainly the smarter option.  Made-to-order gowns need time for production and delivery and cutting that close isn’t worth the stress.

Ready-to-wear gives you more certainty, you know exactly what you’re spending from day one, with fewer additional costs to factor in.

What matters to YOU

If trying the exact dress before committing feels important, off-the-rack wins hands down.  If having something freshly made and entirely yours is what you’ve always imagined, made-to-order might be worth the wait to make your wedding dreams come true.
